[02:17]
The scene she was already lying in bed.
[02:55]
The paramedics said that her heart gave out, I mean that's basically what they said.
[03:03]
They said a combination of the stress and the heat.
[03:07]
Why she never took her medicine, I'll never understand.
[03:12]
To think she went out in peace, with pieces of breadcrumbs in her hand.
[03:20]
Abuela Claudia had simple pleasures, she sang the praises of things we ignore.
[03:26]
Glass coke bottles, breadcrumbs, a sky full of stars, she cherished these things.
[03:32]
She'd say, a la banza, a la banza means to raise this thing to God's face and to
[03:39]
sing, quite literally, praise to this.
[03:43]
She was here, the path was clear, she was just here, she was just here.
[04:25]
And
[06:05]
happy Sunday!
[06:06]
We are listening to Better Living Through Showtoons here on WORT89.9 FM Madison.
[06:13]
I'm your host for this week, Allison Ward, and we kicked off today's show with technically
[06:18]
two numbers, attention from In the Heights and a la banza, also from In the Heights.
[06:28]
Man it was a heavy week for the arts.
[06:36]
We said goodbye to Dolly Parton, to Tim Curry, to Anna Luizos, who was the scenic designer
[06:48]
for In the Heights, along with others.
[06:53]
I think she, Avenue Q, School of Rock, trying to think what others, I think she just did
[07:06]
something else recently, but she was nominated three times for a Tony, for High Fidelity in
[07:15]
2007, for In the Heights in 2008, and for Mystery of Edwin Drude in 2013.
[07:27]
So I just got back from some time in the Northwoods with my family, and I swore every
[07:33]
time I opened my phone, which was rare, I was like, wait, who?
[07:40]
Wait, this person?
[07:43]
That person?
[07:44]
I was like, nah, this can't all be real, but here we are.
[07:49]
So today I'm going to play a couple songs to honor those who we've said goodbye to this
[07:55]
week, but then also look ahead to things to celebrate as well.
[08:01]
So up next, it felt just, it felt right to play I'm Going Home from the Rocky Horror
[08:07]
Picture Show.
[11:43]
Might find love in strangers' faces, waiting just around the corner for all you know.
[11:55]
Love can grow where you least expect it, take a chance and don't reject it.
[12:03]
Love will grow if one just lets it, let love grow.
[12:23]
That you're afraid also would let you, love is out there for the make, and find it in
[12:53]
the eyes of someone that you know, of fashion, there is no denying, there's always everlast
[13:08]
in, let love end up broken, our soul, mind signs, oh, not me, let it find you, let's
[13:51]
it.
[14:34]
No, no, no, I can't take no judge, it's not enough, I can't win this battle, don't put
[14:58]
me, your promises, resurrect your word cuz I can't win this battle on my no, I can't
[15:06]
win this battle, oh you'll prove this fear, you'll win this battle, I can't win this
[16:36]
battle on this is my
[18:24]
Hayden Panettieri singing For Your Glory from the TV show Nashville, another
[18:33]
actress we lost too soon. Before that we heard Let Love Grow from the musical 9 to
[18:43]
5 and again I'm going home from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Another voice from
[18:52]
my childhood and that has now become a part of my kiddos childhood as well.
[19:02]
Peter Cullen also passed away this week and wanted to share a little bit from
[19:13]
just a clip that I had seen online if it wants to work. Gotta love technology when
[19:31]
it decides it wants to work when it wants to work. Okay now let's try again.
[19:35]
Not much of a tale but I'm sort of attached to it. Not much of a house just
[19:54]
right for not much of a donkey. End of the road nothing to do. All the things
[20:08]
getting better. Sounds like Saturday night at my house. I feel like there are
[20:20]
just so many different eeyore quotes that my kiddos will go and just say not
[20:29]
much of a tale and I like I had shared before we were up north and we were
[20:38]
playing out on one of the at one of the parks and one of my daughters had
[20:47]
started to put up some sticks and was like pretending to make herself a little hut
[20:54]
and then she also said that line of not much of a house but it'll do. I forget
[21:03]
what that literally just we'd literally just listen to it but or for not much of
[21:07]
an eeyore is what he says but it's just it's these moments where you just kind
[21:15]
of look back and you're like oh my goodness like these voices of my
[21:20]
childhood these songs these stories just all of these things and the impact that
[21:27]
they make and it just really challenges a person to think about like okay what is
[21:32]
the legacy what is the story that I want to leave behind what is the impact
[21:36]
and how do I want folks to remember me and I fully recognize yes you know
[21:48]
there many of our greats are getting up there in age as some people have said
[21:54]
they're like well it shouldn't be that surprising but it still it's I think one
[21:58]
of the things a friend of mine and I were talking about this past week was
[22:01]
you know these are the voices the actors storytellers who bring light in
[22:09]
some of the darkest times who take a stand without you know being overly
[22:18]
political as folks might say but just being true to themselves and teaching each
[22:25]
and every one of us to be true to ourselves as well in the process I also
[22:31]
just think of the impact Dolly's imagination library has had on my kiddos
[22:37]
I mean my daughters have this massive love of books and I recognize that my
[22:45]
husband and I also have a love of books and storytelling but the access that
[22:52]
they have had in the stories we get each month in the mail but the care that
[23:00]
is also put into that to be able to have books that represent them a book
[23:10]
that I recently gave to my sister-in-law because she's expecting a
[23:14]
baby in the next few months is a story that we got from the imagination library
[23:20]
that the girls absolutely fell in love with and it has been one of those books
[23:24]
that I've continued to pass on but it's called ice cream face and it
[23:28]
features a little black boy who is going to the ice cream shop and it's really
[23:33]
hard to wait but as we went through the book not the first time but maybe the
[23:41]
first time when they had more of that you know awareness or recollection there
[23:47]
are two twin girls who are mixed in the book and my girls every time that we
[23:54]
read that book they go it's us it's us and there are other books that they've
[24:00]
been like mama this person looks like you data this person looks like you oh
[24:04]
oh this looks like uncle calent and like this looks like our friend this like
[24:12]
those are things that I didn't get the chance to say as a child growing up in
[24:17]
the books that I read and to nobody's fault but knowing that Dolly's love of
[24:26]
books has now passed on to my children and through her incredible work just it
[24:34]
means a lot all right now I'll get off my soapbox um sorry for that we are gonna
[24:42]
now transition a little bit we had two shows well Moulin Rouge announced its
[24:51]
closing a while back but today is their last day is their closing night and I
[24:58]
love the show so much there is just so much truth beauty and love freedom in the
[25:08]
care that they put into building that set and that show in New York and being
[25:14]
able to translate it to touring across the country as well but I had a really hard
[25:20]
time picking so I'm sorry we're gonna listen to two songs from the Moulin Rouge
[25:25]
it felt natural to say more more more but this the song and the choreography
[25:33]
and the set design and the costuming and everything that lives rent-free in my brain
[25:39]
and that I will be picturing the entire time that we're listening to it is also
[25:43]
backstage romance so we're gonna kick it off with more more more and then we will go into
[25:49]
backstage romance
[40:09]

[42:32]
sorry i i muted myself when i was trying to click some other buttons um and then before that we heard
[42:40]
like i said my favorite but this number lives rent free in my brain bad romance from um the
[42:47]
moonlawn rouge which is closing today i can't lie though i have been loving seeing all of the
[42:55]
backstage pieces though of performers sharing their memories the workshops the goofy antics
[43:06]
that happened backstage as well um this weekend as they prepared to say goodbye to this beautiful show
[43:13]
on broadway um even though six is closing on broadway in january you can also see six again
[43:21]
at overture center in january and so i thought it would be fun to spend our last little bit of time
[43:28]
together um listening to some of the shows that are going to be coming to overture this season
[43:33]
and so we just heard six from six and now ease on down from the whiz which will be here in october

[50:33]
repent is shining was kaleidoscope from hell's kitchen uh alicia keys is musical which i think
[55:25]
is probably the one that i am most excited to see because i have yet to see that one um before
[55:32]
that we heard if you want perfection from death becomes her and then goodbye my room from maybe
[55:39]
happy ending which also like really this season i'm so excited for all of the things that we have
[55:46]
coming to overture um so many different shows that touch on so many different stories um two other
[55:54]
shows that we'll have coming that um i'm not playing any songs from today but we'll definitely
[55:59]
hit some up um in the coming weeks uh is the outsiders which my mom was shocked to know that
[56:08]
i hadn't read that book um when i was in school but then i was equally shocked when i took her to see
[56:13]
the great gatsby a few weeks ago and she told me that she had never read that book and i was like
[56:17]
okay now we're even but we also have jersey boys coming as well so uh a big hitting um season
[56:26]
