[00:06] You are tuned in to 89.9 WORT FM Madison.
[00:29] FPC Live presents Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass at the Los Angeles. Herb Albert teamed
[00:54] up with producer Wu Adler in the late 50s and began a career as a songwriter. After
[01:00] a visit to Tijuana, Albert multi-tracked his trumpet onto a rejected song and scored
[01:04] his first hit, The Lonely Bull. In 1965, the classic album Whip Cream and Other Delights
[01:10] outsold The Beatles and Frank Sinatra and not only launched massive tours but coincided with
[01:16] Albert founding A&M Records. Herb Albert is back on the road at 91 with a new Tijuana brass band
[01:22] playing all your favorites along with a multimedia show and a Q&A with the audience. More information
[01:29] is available at MadisonOrpheum.com. FPC Live presents Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass at the Orpheum
[01:37] Theater on Saturday, September 19th. You are listening to WORT Madison. This is Katie with
[04:04] Better Living Through Show Tunes here on Sunday afternoon at WORT Madison 89.9.
[04:13] Thanks for tuning in. I hope you'll stay for the hour and listen. I have planned a show
[04:21] for September birthdays this week. I am a September birthday. My birthday is next week,
[04:28] Wednesday, September 16th. So I thought I'd kick it off with Nell Carter from Ain't Misbehavin.
[04:36] This joint is jumping. Nell Carter was born on September 13th. So today would be her birthday.
[04:44] She passed away in 2003, but her legacy and talent live on. So here is another one
[04:52] from Ain't Misbehavin, a little solo number from Nell Carter called Mean To Me.
[05:43] You loved, but I stay home each night. When you say you don't, I'm left alone singing the
[06:19] blues and sighing. And you scold me whenever somebody is near. Oh dear, now it must.
[08:19] Times were innocent and love was free. We'd play guitar and sing and give peace a chance.
[08:32] I was gonna change the world, a fearless girl. But somehow it turned out, changed me.
[08:46] Tears weren't kind to be honest. I miss that flop to be why. How it all turned to be why.
[10:38] It was Shoshana Bean, born on September 1st, singing Wild from The Lost Boys, which is a new
[12:12] musical that just came out this year. So I saw Shoshana Bean. She's one of my favorites.
[12:18] I've seen her in a cabaret. I'm not in cabaret the musical, but in her own cabaret in New York
[12:24] City. And I saw her in Wicked as Elphaba. I saw her in Gypsy at Jury Lane in Chicago. I
[12:32] just love her so much. She was also in Waitress and Hell's Kitchen. All those fun things. She's
[12:39] such a talented woman, let alone all her solo albums that she has. Her pop records are so,
[12:46] so, so much fun. Next up, we have a lady who also was in Wicked. She actually played
[12:53] Elphaba in the beginning stages of Wicked before it went to Broadway. She has also been in The Boy
[13:01] From Oz as Liza Minnelli. She was in Nine to Five. She was in Falsettos. Do any of you know
[13:10] who I'm talking about? She was also in The Cher Show, which she was nominated for. Her name is
[13:18] Stephanie J. Block. And the song that I chose to play by her is called What Is It About Her,
[13:26] which is actually a song from The Wild Party by Andrew Lippa. This is from a concert she did that
[13:35] was like kind of like a miscast because it's usually sung by a male. So she chose to sing this
[13:41] song and I think she is absolutely stunning on it. So I hope that you do too.
[13:48] Here is What It Is About Her by Stephanie J. Block.
[14:48] Born on September 19th, that was Stephanie J. Block. Another September 19th birthday is
[17:08] Ramin Karimlo. So he is from Anastasia, Phantom, Les Mis, Love Never Dies.
[17:18] He played Nick Arnstein in the most recent version on Broadway of Funny Girl with Leah Michelle.
[17:23] And this song is by both of them. It is called You Are Woman, I Am Man.
[17:58] Are someone I've admired? Still, our friendship leaves something to be desired.
[18:13] Does it take more explanation than this? You are woman, I am man, let's kiss.
[18:24] Isn't this the height of nonchalance, furnishing a bed in restaurants? Well, a bit of dinner never
[18:35] hurt, but guess who is gonna be dessert? Two good girls do just what mama says,
[18:41] when mama's not around. It's a feeling, I obey a feeling. A bit of pate? I drink it all day.
[18:50] Should I do the things he'll tell me to? In this pickle, what would Sadie do? In my soul,
[18:58] I feel an inner lack. Just suppose he wants his dinner back. Does it take more explanation than
[19:06] this? Just some dried out toast and a sliver on the top. Ah, a little chopped liver.
[19:16] Little here have something. Whoa! Girls become a sinner while waiting for a roast beef dinner,
[19:28] though most girls slip in ordinary ways. I got style, I do it waterlays. Well, at least he
[19:36] thinks I'm special. He uttered a la carte. It's a feeling I bury. I feel the feeling down to my
[19:46] toes. Now I feel that there's a fire here. Try that once a little higher, dear. What a beast to ruin
[19:55] such a pearl. Would a convent take a Jewish girl? Does it take more explanation than this?
[20:09] Sings and cheers going through me. If I stop him now, can he sue me? You are a woman.
[24:24] That was Patience from the Dreamgirls movie, and you probably recognized Eddie Murphy's voice.
[24:30] The other gentleman was Keith Robinson, but the birthday girl featured on that song
[24:34] is Anika Noni Rose who was born on September 6th. She was in obviously Dreamgirls,
[24:40] Carolina Change, and Footloose. Carolina Change and Footloose were on Broadway, and Dreamgirls
[24:46] was the movie version. She is also the voice of Tiana, the frog princess. So Princess Tiana,
[24:54] which, oh gosh, she just can belt it out, can't she? What an amazing talent. Next up,
[25:04] we have Mr. Stark Sands, who was born on September 30th. He is actually one of my
[25:11] mom's favorites because of his role in Kinky Boots. He was also an American idiot,
[25:17] and this song is from Ann Juliet. It's a Backstreet Boys song, but his little twist on it.
[26:10] See, can't you see how all your love's affecting all reality? Every few can make it right at the
[26:25] crowd, and I see your body sway. Come, don't bring someone takes a spill. It's me and I'm fair,
[28:17] at least I didn't fake it. Hat's hair, I guess I didn't make it. But whether I'm the rose of
[28:27] sheer perfection, or freckle on the nose of life's complexion, the cinder or the shiny apple
[28:34] of the side. A dry one from me can die once right there. Ooh, see, and you see, I gotta get
[28:46] my pipe. Get ready for me, love, cause I'm a comer. I simply gotta march, my heart's a drummer.
[28:54] Don't ring around the clouds, rain on my parade. And live now, get what I want, I know how.
[29:07] One roll for the whole shebang. One throw that bill, little clang. I said it and fake it,
[29:59] I guess it didn't make it. Get ready for me, love, cause I'm a comer. I simply gotta march, my heart's a
[30:06] That was Mr. Billy Porter singing Don't Rain On My Parade from one of his albums.
[30:41] He is an amazing talent as well, obviously. He was Stark Sands's co-star in Kinky Boots,
[30:48] so that's why I decided to play that song right after Mr. Stark Sands sang Larger Than Life from
[30:53] Ann Juliet. Next up we have Michelle Williams, who has been in Cabaret, she has been in Chicago,
[31:04] and also the movie musical The Greatest Showman with Hugh Jackman. Her name is Michelle Williams
[31:10] and she was born on September 9th.
[32:14] I had to fight my daddy, had to fight my brothers, my cousins, my uncles too.
[35:26] But I never, never, never, never, never, never, never thought I'd have to fight
[35:34] in my own house.
[35:38] I feel sorry for you to tell you the truth. You remind me of my mama under your husband's thumb.
[36:00] No, you under your husband's, but he say go scared. But if I'm mad, girl child ain't safe.
[36:34] Sick and tired, how am I a slave? But he tried.
[37:35] That was September 17th's birthday girl, Danielle Brooks. You might know her from
[38:32] Orange is the New Black, but she also was in The Color Purple, starred as Sophia in The Revival.
[38:39] Oh gosh, she is brilliant. Love, love, love her. She sounds so fierce on that song,
[38:45] and that's such a great part of the show when she fights back and tells Miss Seeley,
[38:52] you need to get them off you.
[38:58] So anyway, next up is a song from In the Heights, which was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda,
[39:05] who you know from Hamilton. This is called Benny's Dispatch and it is sung by Christopher Jackson.
[39:13] Christopher Jackson's birthday is September 25th. He starred in In the Heights, obviously,
[39:19] as Benny and he was also in Hamilton as George Washington. But this is Benny's
[39:24] Dispatch from In the Heights, Christopher Jackson.
[39:47] The microphone this morning, honk your horn if you want it.
[39:52] Okay, we got traffic on the west side. Get off at 79th and take a left side.
[39:57] A riverside drive through my slide. Weston's your best friend if you catch the lights.
[40:03] And don't take the digging. Manny Ramirez is in town this weekend.
[40:07] Sorry, the minute gets taken through 87. You ain't getting back in again.
[40:11] Hold up a minute. Benny, hey. Nina, you're home today.
[40:15] Any sign of your folks, they're on their way. Anyway, it's good to see your face.
[40:21] Anytime. Hold up a minute. Wait, you used to run this dispatch, right?
[40:26] Once or twice. Well, check the technique, yo.
[40:31] There's a traffic accident. I have to mention at the intersection of the down in the Jacob
[40:35] Javits Convention Center. And check it don't get stuck in the rubber neck and on our
[40:38] 192nd. There's a double deck of Wasserach. Now listen up. We got a special guest.
[40:55] Anytime. Wait here with me. It's getting hot outside. Turn up the A.C.
[41:37] Stay here with me. You were so cold.
[44:05] Okay, some of you might be wondering what am I listening to?
[44:09] Right now, that is a funny little song from the Jonas, a very Jonas Christmas,
[44:17] the Jonas Brothers Christmas movie. My family thought this show was very, very funny. And
[44:24] so that is Nick Jonas singing with Andrew Barth Feldman, who also played
[44:31] Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen. So it's a little section of the movie where he they're practicing
[44:36] for a musical that they're going to do. And Nick Jonas is fighting with this kid. It's very funny.
[44:43] If you want to know more, watch that movie on Disney. It's hilarious. But Nick Jonas is actually
[44:50] my birthday brother. He is born on September 16th, just like me. So you guys know him from
[44:57] the Jonas Brothers Band, but he also appeared in How to Succeed in Business Without Really
[45:02] Trying on Broadway. Also, he has done Les Mis, The Last Five Years, all fun shows. So I just
[45:11] thought I'd throw that in there. I know it's very, very random. But I thought that it would
[45:20] be kind of like a funny little thing. So it might pique your interest. Check it out.
[45:25] But we will continue with some real show tunes now. Speaking of Dear Evan Hansen,
[45:31] this is For Forever by Ben Platt. Ben Platt's birthday is September 24th.
[46:21] Three's like buddies do. Quoting songs by our favorite bands. Telling jokes no one understands.
[46:29] Except us two. And we talk and take in the view. We see the sky for forever. We let the world pass
[46:45] by for forever. Feels like we could go on for forever this way. Two friends on a perfect day.
[47:00] Things we'll do when we get out of bike the Appalachian Trail or write a book or learn to
[47:20] sail. Wouldn't that be cool? There's nothing that we can't discuss. Like girls we wish would notice
[47:28] us but never do. He looks around and says to me there's nowhere else I'd rather be. And I say
[47:36] me too. And we talk and take in the view. We just talk and take in the view. The sky for
[47:54] let the world pass by for forever. Feels like we two friends on a dance. Then do a bunch giveaway.
[49:10] I'm on the ground. Her room goes numb. I look around and I see him come to get me. Okay.
[49:30] We see a sky for forever. We let the world pass by for forever. Buddy you and I for forever this way.
[49:49] Two friends on a untrue. I love you I do. My very first key. I love you I do.
[52:02] That was yesterday's birthday girl Miss Jennifer Hudson born on September 12th
[53:42] singing Love You I Do from the Dreamgirls movie. That song was written for the movie. But they
[53:48] now include it. I saw that show at the Apollo and when they did it they sang Love You I Do
[53:55] and it made me very very happy. Next up is Mr. James Monroe Aglehart singing Friend Like Me
[54:04] from Aladdin. James was born on September 4th. You may know him from Hamilton and Juliet.
[54:12] But this one is from the Disney classic Aladdin.
[54:30] Everybody give it up for me.
[54:39] I had a thousand tales. You got a brand of magic never failed. You got some power.
[55:01] A corner now. It's an heavy ammunition in your camp. All you got to do is rub that lamp.
[55:10] And I'll say. Mr. Aladdin sir. Order. Shout it down. You ain't never had a friend like me.
[55:21] Now now now. Life is your rush. Yes sir. We bought our sales post service.
[55:34] But you ain't about to scheme this. You wish it's yours. True dish. How about a little more
[55:40] barkle and barf. There it is. It's trial. I had a friend like me. Bring the house now a little bit.
[58:49] Sing a few old classics. A couple of favorites of mine. Thank you. Thank you very much.
[59:02] True as it can be. Look at this stuff. Isn't it neat? Do you think my collection's complete?
[59:15] Wouldn't you think I'm the genie? Who will fly to the room?
