[01:03] This is WORT 89.9 FM Madison and WORT FM.org.
[01:11] Happy Sunday! You are listening to Better Living Through Show Tunes here on WORT 89.9 FM Madison.
[09:08] I'm your host for this week, Alison Ward, and we kicked off today's show with a brand new day from the Wiz Movie Soundtrack.
[09:19] It is pledge drive season.
[09:23] Make sure that you are tuning in.
[09:25] Check out what our fall gifts are, our thank you gifts.
[09:29] We always have some fun things here as you support WORT.
[09:39] This helps us build for the future for that brand new day and everything that is to come here at WORT.
[09:49] You've got so many unique things that you get to listen to and it is all community-based and a place that is all volunteer.
[09:59] It gives me a home to be able to nerd out with you on Sundays as we talk show tunes.
[10:06] Today, we're going to talk about what's coming up.
[10:10] We kicked it off with the Wiz. We'll have the Wiz here in a week.
[10:18] I just had to think about that. I was like, yeah, we got October at the end of this week.
[10:22] We'll have the Wiz at Overture Center. We're going to keep the Wiz energy rolling.
[10:28] We're going to listen to ease on down the road.
[10:32] If you want to, give us a call while you are easing on down the road as well.
[10:39] You can call 608-256-2001, extension 1 to make a pledge.
[10:46] We'll talk a little bit more about those gifts coming up.
[10:49] For right now, I want you to ease on over to that telephone and make that call.
[15:04] We've got a web donation. Thank you, George, for your donation
[15:26] and continuing to support Community Radio here.
[15:32] That was six from the musical Six, The Six Wives of Henry VIII.
[17:21] We don't have six wives here, but we are still community.
[17:26] We are supported by you.
[17:30] You are different because you are different. Everybody has different tastes.
[17:34] Other than SiriusXM, I truthfully don't think that there is another station
[17:39] I've ever listened to that has played my love of musical theater.
[17:44] This is just that fun space, and I love listening to my other hosts as well
[17:51] to be able to see what their preferences are
[17:55] and what they've been enjoying and listening to.
[17:57] I've got to admit, I have a playlist that I constantly am adding songs to
[18:02] that are Broadway songs, and half of it is thanks to other hosts here at WORT.
[18:11] Thanks to them, my range has expanded.
[18:16] I also just get to learn a couple new things, and like I said, I get to nerd out.
[18:20] Thank you for doing that and supporting that here.
[18:25] Let's talk some GIFs now.
[18:28] This year's fall thank you GIFs, we have the infamous WORT bumper sticker,
[18:34] which I love seeing around town because I know it's somebody who loves this station as much as I do.
[18:39] We've got the WORT bumper sticker, which is at the $20 level.
[18:43] Then we have the key chain.
[18:47] Now you can just be walking around and have the WORT key chain or zipper puller.
[18:53] I have to read that one out loud because I don't think I've ever heard a key chain listed as a zipper puller.
[19:02] That is at the $40 level.
[19:04] My favorite thing for walks, I have this as well, is the lightweight bag.
[19:10] It's a crossbody bag.
[19:13] We offered it for the first time during our winter pledge drive.
[19:16] Donors loved it. I love it.
[19:19] It is perfect for walks.
[19:21] It's perfect for adventuring, going to the festivals, whatever it is that you're doing here around town.
[19:26] This is the perfect bag for that.
[19:29] It's like that perfect size.
[19:31] Those are those first three levels.
[19:33] I want you to sit back, think about it, and give us a call at 608-256-2001-2001, extension 1,
[19:39] or we make it real easy.
[19:41] You can head on over to our website, wort.fm, and you can click the donate button.
[19:48] You can see all of the other fall gifts right there on the website before I get to announce the rest of them.
[19:56] Oh, man, we got a really good one at the $100 level this year.
[20:00] Stay tuned as we keep listening to what's coming to Madison.
[20:05] Up next, we're going to listen to Goodbye, My Room, from Maybe Happy Ending.
[20:11] Have you said your goodbyes yet, Pawpoo?
[20:20] We'll be living with James from now on.
[20:24] So, take one last look.
[21:58] You know, it makes me smile when any time I walk in here at WORT or any time I turn it on
[28:41] and listen to the multitude of hosts that we have here.
[28:46] Again, all volunteers who are different and make WORT different and such a special place to be.
[28:54] I mean, again, where else can you listen to show tunes, listen to only female artists playing in a show with her infinite variety,
[29:04] or even getting the chance?
[29:06] I love listening to culturally specific shows as well.
[29:12] And, again, where else do you get to do that other than right here?
[29:15] And, again, it's all thanks to you.
[29:19] I promised I would talk a little bit more about some of the gifts you can look ahead to.
[29:24] I meant to also say, so we talked about the lightweight bag, which is my favorite,
[29:30] that while it's at the $60 level, you can make that one-time $60 donation,
[29:35] or you can be a monthly donor by signing up to give $5 a month.
[29:42] So, just $5 out of your pocket.
[29:44] Maybe there's a coffee or a breakfast sandwich or a sandwich for lunch.
[29:50] Everybody always talks about the coffee.
[29:52] Sorry, I had that thought as I was saying that out loud.
[29:54] I was like, why do we always call it the coffee?
[29:59] Anyways, we also have, at the $100 level, we have the skull baseball hat,
[30:06] the wart logo with the skull and sunglasses with headphones on.
[30:12] You can do that, or you can, again, become a monthly donor at $8.33 a month.
[30:19] But the thing that I think is very unique for this season's pledge drive,
[30:27] if you commit to $7.50 a month, you can get our We're Different,
[30:34] the theme of this year's pledge drive, or this season's pledge drive.
[30:41] I truthfully am not even sure how to describe this shirt, but it is quirky,
[30:46] it is fun, it is a cow, duck, bird, peacock, elif, and brino.
[30:55] You'd go online. Again, come visit us at wrt.fm.
[31:01] Come online, take a look at the picture, or head on over to our social media,
[31:05] and I'm sure that we've got the picture on there somewhere,
[31:07] and you're going to get to see my face real soon as well.
[31:11] I know you listen to me at least one Sunday a month, if not two,
[31:15] but so now you're going to get to see my face if you come and follow us on social media.
[31:19] We're going to be doing some fun stories and highlights of our volunteers here
[31:25] so that you can see the face and not just the voices of us here at WORT.
[31:32] So before I started yapping at you, we listened to
[31:37] You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile from Annie,
[31:41] which I am very excited.
[31:43] CTM's first show of their new season is going to be Annie,
[31:48] playing also at Overture in the Capitol Theater.
[31:51] They are going to be performing at the end of October,
[31:54] so we've got Saturday the 24th is their opening,
[31:58] and then they've got performances on Sunday, October 25th,
[32:01] and then they will have some performances Friday, October 30th, the 31st,
[32:06] and then Sunday, November 1st.
[32:08] So make sure that you get your tickets and support local theater.
[32:12] I have to admit, I just got a chance to see the new work,
[32:16] Steady She Goes, performed by Forward Theater,
[32:20] and it was such a breathtaking performance.
[32:25] As much as I love and appreciate us bringing in so many different touring shows here to Madison,
[32:32] getting that opportunity to see local theater supporting your neighbor,
[32:38] just like you support us here at WRT, getting to support your neighbor in a show,
[32:43] getting to support new work, unique work, it's incredible.
[32:48] So any chance you get when you see our local theaters putting on shows,
[32:53] make sure that you're checking that out as well.
[32:55] So come support Children's Theater of Madison
[32:58] and come see Annie at the end of October,
[33:01] but we're going to get back to the music,
[33:03] and we're going to go next to Alicia Keys singing Kaleidoscope from Hell's Kitchen.
[37:41] It turns out I was wrong and might sound crazy
[37:46] Hear me out, it may take me to the grave
[37:55] But I know what your poem's about
[37:58] I've seen a pool of blood rung crimson red
[38:06] And I've seen the sunrise coming overhead
[38:14] Pounding beauty in the fall
[38:20] It's the only way I'm growing
[38:25] My friend, stay gold
[38:30] And the world is new
[38:37] It's easy to forget when you're trying just to make it through
[38:45] In life and the dawn it brings
[38:53] The world finding beauty in the simple things
[39:01] Looked into thankful father's eyes
[39:09] I've saved his daughter's life
[39:17] I'd do it all again
[39:23] Cause I found in the fall
[39:28] My friend, stay gold
[39:32] And back of the life I've had
[39:44] I'll hold on to the good
[39:49] Cause I made my peace with all the bad
[39:52] 60 years, look at all we've done
[40:04] Needed for the world, can't you see the lucky one
[40:41] There's still a lot of time to make yourself what you want, Ponyboy
[40:44] There's still a whole lot of good in the world
[40:47] Tell Dally, I don't think he knows
[40:54] Finding beauty in the fall
[40:58] It's the only way I'm growing
[41:07] My friend, stay
[41:59] So close and so far
[42:01] Self innate about the girl
[42:27] I see how I'm so close
[42:54] And yet so far, so far
[43:23] Close, so close and yet so far
[43:50] Cause my eyes adored you from Jersey Boys, the musical
[43:54] Before that, we heard stay gold from the outsiders
[44:00] You are what helps W.O.R.T. stay gold here
[44:04] And Madison, again, if you want to call to make a pledge
[44:08] You can make a one time donation
[44:10] You can make that pledge to be a monthly donor
[44:14] You can get the quirky shirt
[44:18] If you want to become a monthly
[44:22] Yeah, subscriber
[44:24] But a monthly donor, that's the word we're looking for
[44:27] And you can do all that by calling 608-256-2001, extension 1
[44:37] Or you can go to our website and hit that donate button
[44:40] It's real easy
[44:41] You don't have to talk to anybody if you don't want to
[44:43] I mean, it's a 50-50 shot
[44:46] Sometimes I'm like, yeah, let me talk to somebody
[44:48] Other times I'm like, let me just click a couple buttons
[44:52] So whatever it is that you want to do, we will see it
[44:55] And we will appreciate it
[44:56] No matter what, no gift is too small or too big
[45:01] Up next, we're going to go live it up on top
[45:04] Because we slowed things down with stay gold and my eyes adored you
[45:07] So we're going to pick things back up with living it up on top from Hadestown
[45:22] To hell, there was a lotta women on the train
[45:28] Waiting on the train to bring that lady
[45:34] With the suitcase back again
[45:37] She never stayed for long
[45:45] A young girl decided to stick
[47:37] Living it up on top
[49:23] Bless this round
[49:30] To us with wine enough to share
[49:44] Asking nothing in return
[49:46] Except that we should live and learn to live
[49:50] As brothers in this life
[49:52] And to trust she will provide
[49:55] And if no one takes too much
[49:58] There will always be enough
[50:01] She will always fill our cups
[50:03] I will
[50:04] And we will always raise them up
[50:07] To the world we dream about
[50:11] And the one we live in now
[50:15] Cause right now we're living it out
[50:58] We have an anonymous web donation
[51:01] Thank you anonymous
[51:03] And they picked out the lightweight black bag
[51:06] Good, good choice
[51:08] Again, I hope that whoever you are
[51:11] You're going to be able to take that out
[51:13] To lots of different festivals
[51:15] Represent W.O.R.T. and your love
[51:17] For better living through show tunes
[51:19] Will you show a little character?
[51:24] Mademoiselle, please
[51:26] These things do happen
[51:28] See, these things do happen
[51:31] Well until you stop with these things
[51:36] Christine Dye could sing it, sir
[51:38] A chorus girl?
[51:40] Let her sing for you, Monsieur
[51:42] You've been well taught
[51:52] You caught me far
[51:59] Once in a while
[52:00] Please draw
[52:06] When you find
[52:07] That once again you long
[52:09] To take your heart
[54:07] She may not remember her
[54:58] As think of me from the Phantom of the Opera
[55:03] And it can be formed that we heard living it up on top
[55:06] We're living it up on top here at W.O.R.T. 89.9 FM Madison
[55:13] It has been my pleasure
[55:14] To be your host for this week
[55:16] And I have some special guests here
[55:19] In the studio as well with me today
[55:22] To help raise some money
[55:25] We want to ring the bell one time
[55:28] Before we head off air
[55:30] But I've got...
[55:32] Who do I have right here?
[55:34] I'm Mary!
[55:35] And what song did you pick out
[55:36] For the show today?
[55:37] I went to before the Wizard and I
[55:40] I thought you picked popular
[55:42] I thought mamas got queued up
[55:43] But...
[55:44] Oh yeah!
[55:45] Okay, so we got popular
[55:46] To close out our time together
[55:48] Here on Better Living Through Show Tunes
[55:50] On W.O.R.T. 89.9 FM Madison
[55:53] Elfie, now that we're friends
[55:57] I've decided to make you my new project
[56:00] Oh, you really don't have to do that
[56:02] I know
[56:03] That's what makes me so nice
[56:06] Whenever I see someone
[56:10] Less fortunate than I
[56:12] And let's face it right
[56:14] Who isn't?
[56:15] Less fortunate than I
[56:17] My tender heart tends to start to bleed
[56:21] And when someone needs a makeover
[56:23] I simply have to take over
[56:25] I know
[56:26] I know
[56:27] Exactly
[56:29] What they need
[56:33] And even in your case
[56:36] Though it's
[56:38] The toughest case
[56:40] If he had to face
[56:42] Don't worry
[56:44] I'm determined
[56:46] Popular
[57:03] You're gonna be popular
[57:05] I'll teach you the proper voice
[57:08] When you talk to boys
[57:10] The ways to flirt and frown
[57:12] I'll show you what shoes to wear
[57:14] How to fix your hair
[57:16] Everything that really counts to be popular
[57:19] I'll help you be popular
[57:22] You'll hang with the right course
[57:24] You'll be good at sports
[57:26] Know the slang you've got to know
[57:38] By my frank enough
[57:39] Think of it as personality dialysis
[57:43] Now that I've chosen to become a
[57:48] But when it comes to popular
[57:50] I know about popular
[57:54] And with an assist from me
[57:56] To be who you'll be
[57:59] Well are
[58:00] There's nothing that can stop you
[58:01] From becoming popular
[58:05] Or
[58:12] We're gonna make you
[58:13] Popular creatures
[58:19] With unprepossessing features
[58:22] I remind them
[58:26] To think of
[58:28] Celebrate
[58:34] Have brains or knowledge
[58:35] Don't make me laugh
[58:37] They were popular
[58:39] Right!
[58:40] It's all about popular
[58:42] It's not about aptitude
[58:45] It's the way you're viewed
[58:46] So it's very true
[58:47] It's a fair puppy
[58:48] They're new from popularity
[59:17] The only bread and puppet circus
[59:59] Is back to confront our upside down situation
[60:02] With stilt dancers
[60:03] Paper mache beasts of all sizes
[60:05] And a riotous brass band
[60:07] The upside down world circus

[60:59] Knowing your rights isn't just important
[61:02] In these challenging times
[61:04] It's essential
